The grant that I chose was a grant proposed by Beverly Bolton who works for the City of North Las Vegas Fire department. This grant was for the very worthy cause of obtaining a car seat installation program. In this proposal the author explains how many people of the city come to their department asking for a car seat because they aren’t able to afford to buy one themselves, and there proposals will assist the fire department in helping people install their carseats so that their children can be as safe as possible when riding in the car.
This grant proposal was awarded 5000 for their installation program in 2011 by State Farm, in this proposal the author starts with the need for this program and some statistics on the number of parents who have their seats incorrectly installed, and lists the objectives.
I think this was a great thing for state farm to fund. As an insurance company I think there main goal is to make people as safe as possible and makes their establishment look better in the eyes of the public. Of course, it is also a great thing for the fire department because it really helps there movement so much more even with just $5000.
Attempting to put a grant proposal together is no easy task. Beginning this assignement I assumed it would be challenging putting it together but as I am looking more into it, I’m finding the hardest thing to do is deciding what topic is important to me. I have decided to choose a need in Wichita that would need attention and write up a proposal for the topic, but it’s so difficult to choose just one!
Meanwhile, the body and layout of the proposal has been easier than I thought. I have used some pretty amazing resources that have been really influential in starting this proposal. The first site I’ve been using is called http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/grant-proposals-or-give-me-the-money/ I love this site because it gives you a nice flow chart, and I love a good flow chart. This chart gives you the whole grant writing process which is very helpful, along with a very detailed description of each piece of a grant. I also love how it gives you different resources for grant writing.
I’ve also been using this sample grant proposal to help guide me through the formatting of the grant which can definitely be tricky. http://www.kurzweiledu.com/files/proof_resources_grant1.pdf it’s amazing how intricate this grant is, so I’m hoping with a couple of these resources my grant proposal will be just as detailed.
Working in a group to achieve a common goal can be difficult, when you add no face to face time that make the task that much more difficult. Working in this group gives a chance to face a difficulty that not many of us have had experience with, which I think it great because it just broadens our knowledge and ill prepare us for future projects. In today’s world of technology it isn’t hard to believe that someday I may again have to work with a group of people that I know almost nothing about.
I think this chapter was helpful to the group project because it gave us all some common ground. For me I thought page 270 was quite helpful. This page gave you a outline of what you should be aiming for when drafting a report such as a PSA, it lists that the content should be Accurate, Complete, Balanced, Clear and Logical, and Documented Properly. These are all things that I kept in mind as I was doing my portion of the PSA. I also think that the images and different colors of text we used really added additional to our PSA, it was eye catching and stimulating instead of just another boring announcement.
I think this assignment was great exposure to something new and challenging, and although it may have been difficult the members of my group and myself were able to step up to the plate and successfully complete this assignment.
